Netradičný retelling rozprávky o 7 zhavranelých bratoch, samozrejme s pozmenenými prvkami, čínskym nádychom a jedným bezočivým drakom.

Princezná Shiori v sebe ukrýva zrnko mágie. Nikto o tom nesmie vedieť, pretože mágia je v kráľovstve Kiata niečo zakázané a platí sa za ňu smrťou. Tí, čo ovládali mágiu mali totiž vždy blízko k démonom.
Keď Shiori odhalí, že jej nevlastná matka je skrytým démonom manipulujúcim s jej rodinou a celým kráľovstvom, uvrhne na ňu macocha kliatbu a jej 6 bratov premení na žeriavy. Za každé 1 slovo vyrieknuté nahlas, jeden z jej bratov umrie a ešte ich rozdelí aj oceánom.

 

“Pain doesn’t get easier,” I reminded myself when I flinched. “You just have to get stronger.”

Prvá tretina knihy je mimoriadne pútavá, plná nových udalostí, stretnutí. S blížiacim sa stredom dej paradoxne trochu zadrhával, časť v jaskyni bola jednotvárna a zdĺhavá. Našťastie od polovice to opäť naberie spád, zvraty, intrigy a záver prinesie aj pár zaujímavých odhalení. Nemôžem sa však ubrániť pocitu, že už toho bolo príliš. Akoby autorka poprepájala X príbehov a výsledný efekt pôsobí chaoticky. Nepomohol ani fakt, že som celý čas očakávala logické a uspokojivé zakončenie príbehu, no dostala som otvorený záver. Neviem, prečo som Six Crimson Cranes považovala za standalone, tak sa nedajte pomýliť ako ja, podľa dostupných informácií to má byť naozaj dilógia.

Ak ste čítali autorkine diela zo série The Blood of Stars (Spin the Dawn a Unravel the Dusk), asi vás nepoteším. Kniha je síce príjemná a dobre sa číta, ale na The Blood of Stars nemá. Príbehom, cestou ani prekážkami, ktoré musí samotná hrdinka prekonať. Uvidíme, čím prekvapí druhá časť a či ešte dokáže napraviť ten nemastný - neslaný dojem.
